Abstract

Nanoparticles (NPs) materials with at least one dimension between 1 and 100 nanometers have emerged as one of the most transformative fields in modern chemistry and materials science. Their exceptional and often size-tunable physicochemical properties, arising from quantum confinement effects and dramatically increased surface-to-volume ratios, distinguish them fundamentally from their bulk counterparts. This review provides a comprehensive overview of nanoparticle science, encompassing their classification by composition and morphology, the principal synthetic routes (top-down and bottom-up), key characterization techniques, and the broad spectrum of chemical applications including catalysis, drug delivery, environmental remediation, sensing, and energy conversion. We also critically examine the challenges surrounding nanoparticle stability, scalability, toxicity, and regulatory concerns. Emerging trends in green synthesis, smart nanomaterials, and theranostic platforms are highlighted, and future directions are discussed. This review aims to serve as a reference for chemists, materials scientists, and engineers working at the nanoscale frontier.
