Abstract

Introduction/Background: The use of cloud computing, remote connections and distributed networks has rendered traditional cybersecurity models based on perimeter security obsolete. Traditional approaches, which assume trust in the network and traffic flows inside the network, are no longer sufficient to defend against modern hazards such as insider threats, credential theft and advanced persistent threats.

Problem: Perimeter-based security models cannot support the modern distributed network with the increased adoption of the cloud and remote work.

Evidence: Implicit trust is abused by almost all cyberattacks (ransomware, phishing, and insider threats) to breach security and propagate through the network.

Method, tools, technology, model, formula: The Zero Trust Security Model provides the most protection when implemented with continuous authentication, least privilege access, micro-segmentation, real-time monitoring and behavioral analysis, the cloud, and artificial intelligence.

Outcomes/Conclusion: Zero Trust will reinforce the cybersecurity posture of most modern organizations and support them with positive security against the threats in the current cyberspace. Zero Trust eliminates implicit trust and provides the most protection when integrated with continuous verification of access requests in all environments.
